How to Mount a Winch

Mounting a off-road winch onto the front of your off-road or recovery vehicle is an extremely effective method of extracting a vehicle that is stuck. The general rule states to install a winch that can pull 1 1/2 times the weight of the vehicle. That means that a 5,000 pound vehicle would do well with a 7,500-pound winch rating. Make sure all the electrical connections are clean and tight, and never mix the polarities up: The red wire must go to the positive, and the black to the negative side of the battery.

Attach the winch to the vehicle winch bumper using the supplied hardware. Almost all winches attach to the bumper using four bolts. Set the winch into the mount location, line up the holes from underneath, and install the bolts and washers used to secure the winch down. Install the bolts very tightly, because winches are capable of a massive amount of power. Thread sealant can be used on the bolts to ensure they will not walk out over time.

Connect the red cable to the positive (+) battery terminal. The ends of the winch power cables will be fitted with an eyehole-type connector terminal. Simply loosen the clamp bolt to the battery cable connector (usually a ½ inch or 13 mm size), remove the bolt, and place the eyelet over the bolt before reinstalling it. This will keep the winch’s cables from loosening up, and provide clean, strong power to the winch.
