How to Buy an Industrial Winch

For profession car maintenance, an industrial winch is a must- have for the heavy pulling and lifting needed for larger automotive parts. Industrial winches come in all sizes so there is a winch for any situation. An industrial winch makes the maintenance and repair jobs easier and safer and it makes sense to use an industrial winch for all automotive maintenance jobs.

Consider the load capacity. Load capacity is the maximum amount of lbs. that is to be lifted or pulled. If you will be lifting cars, you will need a electric winch that can pull or lift at least 4000 lbs. Trucks will be heavier so you will need a winch that can lift over 4000 lbs.

Determine what kind of motor you want to operate the winch. Electric motors use single or three phase voltages and are coupled with a direct drive. This maximizes the power output and gives better control.

Decide how much to spend. Winches that can pull a heavy load will be bigger and more expensive because it takes more material to make bigger winches. Less expensive winches will be cheaper because they will be smaller, but they won’t be able to pull or lift larger loads. They won’t last as long either, because pulling or lifting heavier loads than their specifications state will cause a higher wear and tear and cause more breakdowns.

Find a winch retailer. Call a heavy equipment store and ask what they have in stock. Check with the local mechanics for the best place to find a winch. Make sure you know the maximum weight you will be moving because not every winch can handle the same amount of weight.

Choose the direction of the winch. For proper placement and assembly, the direction of your winch is important. Right-handed winches lift the drum in a clockwise direction while a left-handed winch lifts in a counter-clockwise direction.
